Introduction:
Between America and Canada, over 18,000 people were killed in a single year (2006) as a result of drinking a primitive, lethal, backward, uncivilized chemical sold legally in every neighbourhood in the "civilized" western world, and then driving.
The number of injured due to that chemical is over half a million, including the countless numbers of permanently disabled. The ill effects on surviving family members are incalculable.
But those 18,000 are only the tip of the iceberg, since they are all the result of one aspect of drunkenness - drinking and driving, and don't include the shootings, stabbings, and other murders, killings and injuries committed by drunk people in the home or out of the home.
That figure - 18,000 - is up to seven to eight 9/11s every single year due to the worst terrorist weapon in existence - as evidenced by the consequences of its use - blessed and legalised by western governments and consumed by the leaders of those governments themselves.
In a 2007 survey of the Canadian public, fear of drunk drivers came at the top of their road safety concerns. "Road safety" came ahead of "terrorist attacks" which ranked seventh overall in Canadians' top concerns. "Crime rate in one's community" followed right on the heals of 'terrorism', 4 points difference, compared to 14 points difference that 'road safety' comes ahead of 'terrorism'.

What really sows terror and agony in our lives

People are terrorised by much more than the cliche "terrorism", such as the 9/11 attacks, London's 7/7 bombings, Madrid train bombs, etc., as barabric as those atrocities are.
People, day to day, are more anxious of becoming the victims of a drunk driver (16700 deaths in 2002); returning home after work to find their home had been broken into, robbed and ransacked; finishing shopping to find their car had been stolen or broken into, or walking in a park or down the street at night, or on some inner city street in broad daylight and being mugged, assaulted, or raped.
None of those traumatic experiences may cause death, but the trauma of some has been known to extend for many years, and the anxiety and stress they bring about are known to cause many medical and mental problems. Something as simple as a break-in leaves the victims feeling violated, vulnerable, and for many months, even years, feeling anxious whenever they go out and leave their home and their belongings unguarded.
The same with car thefts and car-jackings, and much worse with rapes and other forsm of sexual assault. Many, indeed most women in the USA - young and old alike - cannot fully or properly enjoy the freedom they are entitled to in such a free and open society such as going out at any time of the day, or enjoying any place they wish to be in. They fear going out alone after dark, even for a jog in the park if it is in an isolated area; they fear going out for a walk on their own on out of the beaten route nature trails, or beaches, etc., even in daylight, and so on.
In other words, they can't enjoy what life offers them in their own country because of crime committed mostly because of the failure of authorities to crackdown on the real causes of pain and misery for the American people in their daily lives. Problems such as drugs and the need for drug money; sexual predators on the loose even after several convictions; drunk drivers often given what amounts to a slap on the wrist even when they kill; guns easily available to criminals, and the list of real problems goes on.
Those are the real fears and anxieties people live day to day, not the fear of a terrorist attack. Those kinds of crimes are the true terrorism in people's lives that need to and should be fought more vigorously to improve the American people's quality of life.
Sure, there's no question we need to guard against terrorist attacks, but in truth even if we didn't do a good job of it the chances are 99.99% of us will never encounter or experience the form of terrorism the media and government are focussing on, while our lives will quite likely be traumatized and terrorised by other common and prevalent ills.

And in the case of Muslims and those whose appearance is Muslim:
increased fear of physical harm, discrimination, mistreatment, verbal abuse; attacks on businesses and places of worship, all of which make their lives full of terror and pain.
And in the case of prisoners of war and political prisoners,
terror of torture and sadistic physical and sexual abuse
terror of being detained and mistreated, regardless of innocence or guilt
For ordinary citizens of nations occupied by America:
terror of being bombed or shot at by trigger-happy soldiers, pilots, etc. (even Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan were killed by a trigger happy (to put it kindly) America pilot, as the cockpit recordings have shown).
