Hate in the Media: Responses to hateful editorials, op-eds, columns in western media
Humanist and Secular Muslims
Responding to Hate against Muslims: Over 200 internal web pages of articles, resources, and insights
NOTE: We categorically reject the use of the intolerance, hate crimes, racism and discrimination exposed or recorded on this web site or elsewhere - which Muslims, Arabs and other visible minorities suffer from or experience in western nations - to make any kinds of generalizations about the west, Christianity, the white race, or any other kinds of generalizations.
Generalizations are not only irrational, they do not reflect reality, and we have no use for them. No matter how many "white", "Christian", "westerners" practice intolerance and racism, the overwhelming majority are the most decent, tolerant people imaginable. Significantly, the same applies to the other side, the Muslim side, and indeed one could invoke the same in every other "side", Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, etc. as evidence to that truth.
This page is dedicated to the millions of mainstream westerners who reject hate, speak up against it, and write to the media to challenge and expose haters and racists.
Responding to Hateful Opinions expressed by some commentators against Muslims
A page of analyses and rebuttals of anti-Muslim, hatemongering commentaries, op-eds, articles, and their like made by Islam haters - as exposed by their writings and commentaries.
REMEMBER
Love and hate are two way streets. It is very difficult to love those who continually express and propagate hate against you. It is as difficult to integrate into a society where hate is regularly expressed against you. Notably, those who complain that Muslims do not integrate fast enough are the very ones placing the obstacles of hate in their way by regularly expressing hate against Muslims. Ponder the irony.
REMEMBER
Expressing intolerant views about a minority group is one of the early stages on the very same scale of which later stages include strife, instability, and violence, and which culminates with mass murder or genocide at its far end. History offers ample examples, some quite recent. Hate expression against any minority group is a crime.
REMEMBER
Even the harshest, most severe criticism, and exposure of wrongs and corruption, can be successfully expressed and achieved without including the element of hate. Journalists and others do that every day on a variety of topics.
When hate is infused and injected in criticism the purpose is no longer criticism or exposure of wrongs, but hate-incitement against those who are supposedly being criticised.
HaSM
Western mainstream racists who hate Muslims and Islam, are engaged in callous campaigns of hate with total indifference to the consequences of their actions which will ultimately destroy the peace and harmony of the western nations they live in. They have quite substantially already succeeded in causing divisiveness, disharmony, and strife in quite a few European countries. And why do they jeopardize and threaten the harmony and peace of their nations with total indifference to the consequences? Simply to fulfil and satisfy deep personal hatreds and agendas.
As the reader will discover from the analyses on this page:
It is not Muslims who are threatening the harmony of the societies they live in - not at all - but the mainstream western haters who are.
BEFORE READING ON PLEASE READ SOME BASIC BACKGROUND INFO IN THE FOLLOWING:
Read about the primary reasons behind the campaigns of hate against Muslims and Islam in the West: American Madrassas.
Find out how 9/11, or any other terrorism attributed to "Muslims" has nothing to do with the deeply entrenched racism in those Europeans who are racists:

You can also read about the true nature of Muslims and Islam through objective analyses based on fact - not the hyperbole, innuendo, and sensationalism of the racists and haters in the western media - to understand why the campaigns of hate are racist, and the accusations they make unfounded.

The hallmarks of HATE commentaries and commentators
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Racists, Bigots, and Haters:
1-Consistently depict a group through the negative actions or words of some of its members.
2-Consistently and unwaveringly ignore, dismiss, belittle, reject any positive in the group they hate, no matter how significant, telling, and refuting of the hateful views they express.
3-Consistently ignore, dismiss, or belittle any comparisons with similar ills, evils, wrongs, and negative actions by members of their own group.
4-In the long term, stick to the above 3 points without any deviation, no matter how conditions change, situations and events prove them wrong, or circumstances refute their views.
5-Never admit or recognise any suffering or wronging of the group they hate.
Example: When the Kosovars were being ethnically cleansed in heart-wrenching scenes where the elderly were being carted in wheelbarrows, the children barely able to walk, we had haters writing it was no big deal and that it was not worth destroying the infrastructure of Serbia! Typical Nazi collaborators' and supporters' lingo of the past.
6-Choose legitimate issues and topics for their arguments in which they embed their hateful generalisations and stereotyping of the group they target with hate.
7-Make statements that are consistently simplistic, irrational, and shallow. Blind hate invariably produces irrationality and blindness of both mind and heart, a hallmark of haters.
Example: Michael Coren, who's infamous for displaying almost all components of hate speech, every time he writes about Muslims hatefully, his arguments are immature, juvenile and childish in their hateful views, even worse than being simply simplistic and shallow. See the examples analysed below.
8-Regularly add fake qualifications and caveats regarding the hate they express: See Playing with semantics.
Example: Mark Steyn in the Maclean's magazine book excerpt 'The Future Belongs to Islam', writes "now time for the obligatory ofcourses" (that not all Muslims are Islamists, etc., etc.), then nullifies and diminishes from his own qualifications proving they are made 'pour la forme' only, and not with any sincerity. Another hallmark of haters and racists.
9-Fully support, praise, and applaud Islamo-opportunists - Muslim sellouts who have chosen the temptations of personal gain and self-interest, and their fifteen minutes of fame over integrity, honour and principles, and who toe the haters' line, and kowtow to the haters' media. In general, those Islamo-opportunists write in the hateful media and consider that some kind of promotion, being accepted in that hateful media because it is the more powerful, and the prevailing one at present.
Expounding some of the above points:
10-point 1, Generalizations and stereotyping. The crimes of criminals of the group targeted with hate, no matter how similar or more benign than those committed by common criminals of other groups or the hater's own group, are generalised as if the whole group targeted with hate is criminal. The accusations are made indirectly, and with lots of fillers to make them appear legitimate and part of an objective argument. To any discerning, impartial observer, the message is very clear, all members of that group are criminals, evil, etc.
11-Elaborating on point 2, they search for, or fabricate the negative in what is strikingly positive. That is to say, they never, under any circumstances, admit the positive in the group they hate, let alone praise that positive or emphasize it. And naturally, they never have anything positive to say or to write about the group they hate, nor do they want to say anything positive about it.
Objectivity, facts, good and bad, reality, truth are all irrelevant; they are driven solely by their hate.
They strive to find negative in the positive, and then highlight it.
12-Similarly they strive to find the positive in the strikingly and indisputably negative of their own group, and reject any comparisons with the group they hate.
13-They consistently blatantly spin anything that disagrees with or refutes their views to make it appear as though they are right.
Example: George Jonas, of the National Post, writing that firing a French cartoonist from the paper he works for for alleged anti-Semitic innuendo was a contractual issue not one of freedom of Speech! To that extent he feels secure through the protection of his employers as long as he writes what pleases them, no matter how ludicrous and contrived. And to that extent he is willing to write any gibberish knowing it will be printed. And to that extent he and the paper show a deep disdain for the cognitive abilities of the readers.
14-On point 5, when hate is being explicitly expressed against Muslims in the media they will look the other way, find excuses for it, justify or support it, but never ever admit it is hateful and wrong, or how similar it is to, say, anti-Semitism.
Such a case is clear in the 'George Jonas' example above: Anti-Semitism firings are contractual, but Islam-hating is freedom of speech!
Or when the sadistic scandal of Abu Ghraib was exposed we had people - including American Congress members - making light of it, and belittling the torture of Iraqis in general.
Same with torture in Guantanamo, etc. The haters have no humanity, only hate in their hearts which blinds them to any human suffering no matter child or infirm, if it is of the group they hate.
So you will never find any compassion, any empathy, any concern expressed for the victims if they belong to the group they hate.
It's exactly the equivalent of anti-Semitism. Those who hate Jews have no sympathy for Jews no matter how deep their suffering may be or may have been. Those who are extreme in their hatred will go out of their way to make light of the suffering of the group they hate, while other lesser haters may simply be silent about the matter.
So in general, like Holocaust denial, haters of Muslims deny whatever and any suffering Muslims may be undergoing or have undergone.
15-Twisting and warping events and news to suit their hateful purposes. They also highlight - if insidiously and implicitly - Muslim-related symbols next to evil and violence.
For example, in an example below in The Toronto Sun, by Michael Coren, a subtitle that could have been anything else, says "Muhammad", standing alone just like that.
What was new about the topic was naming a teddy bear 'Muhammad' by a teacher in Sudan. Any subtitle but 'Muhammad' would have made the topic clear, since 'Muhammad' may be about anything at all in the world. It says nothing about the topic in question, and was placed there simply to associate more emphatically the name "Muhammad" with whatever hateful views the writer expresses.
Or the same with photos of a veiled woman placed next to any negative news about Muslims or about violence, etc.. The tactics are all juvenile, elementary and easily identifiable. Sadly, however, they do have an effect on ordinary readers who don't know anything about Muslims other than what they read in such media, and so are easily swayed by such imagery.
Please read refutations of such strategies in our articles section under the 'Hate' category section in the articles section. Such haters are exposed fully and their hateful views are torn apart and totally discredited.

Omar Khadr: Just a kid

I honestly have no opinion on whether Omar Khadr should be brought back or left to the integrity of the American justice system. But what's difficult to read is supposedly mature, educated adults, such as Susan Martinuk, writing profoundly flawed views. A 15-year-old cannot have yet developed the character and mindset to be committed to anything at all, let alone to something as grandiose as "fighting against western values and our very way of life." What a silly thing to say about a 15-year-old.
When it comes to matters of ideology imposed by adults, a young person is a prime candidate for rehabilitation. That's especially true when compared to those youths who commit random violence in our own cities every day, often indicating a predisposition to violence, making them harder to rehabilitate. And yet we try.
Every negative view Martinuk quoted against Khadr is nullified immediately by his age when he committed his alleged crime. It would be a different story had he been an adult. One would expect a little more thought from Martinuk.

There is no place for 'hate speech' in Canada
July 08, 2008
Hesham M. Sabry
The Record (Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, newspaper)
Free speech is unquestionably a pillar of a healthy democracy, making sure that wrongs are exposed and criticized. However, even the harshest criticism can be successfully expressed without including the element of hate.
So what exactly are the misguided champions of free speech inadvertently supporting then . . . "hate" per se? Muslims take criticism -- both justifiable and unjustifiable -- every single day, but "hate"is uncivilized and unacceptable.
People generally follow the unwritten laws of common decency that allow societies to function in a civilized, peaceful and harmonious manner. But because of the potential harm of hate and discrimination by those indifferent to the peace and harmony of the societies they live in, there arose a need for hate laws and specialized bodies such as the human rights commissions. Decent people don't deny the Holocaust, but there are laws against hate propaganda because some care more about their agendas than the well-being of society or groups within it.
The Holocaust didn't develop overnight. Six million Jews perished because Jews were relentlessly demonized over many years. The hate eventually dehumanized them and paved the path to the day it became acceptable to massacre them. The Nuremberg trials acknowledged the destructive power of hate by sentencing to death a magazine publisher who routinely promoted hate against Jews.
Likewise, the Rwandan genocide tribunals sent various media executives to jail for inciting ethnic hatred. European Union investigations found that television was regularly used to promote hate against Bosnian and Kosovan Muslims, leading to the atrocities there. So anxieties about hate are far from frivolous or contrived.
Today, we're flooded with news and films addressing the consequences of hatred: Rwanda, Kosovo, Bosnia, the Holocaust, the recent Kenyan and South African massacres. Yet some people turn around, as if it all meant nothing, and call for unfettered free speech!
If a publication in Iran was promoting hate against Jews (as is the case), would those Canadians opposing human rights commissions in Canada condemn Jews in Iran who complained to Iran's human rights commissions, if any existed? Would they say it's an issue of "free speech" and condemn those commissions?
Have they contemplated what might have been the outcome for millions of Jews had there been -- long before the Nazis -- German commissions with the full authority to confront hate speech, and shut down irresponsible media?
In fact, German hate laws of the time proved abysmally inadequate. That is no longer so. Now they jail anti-Semites, such as Holocaust deniers.
In the years between the two world wars there wasn't any notion of exterminating Jews. But while life seemed "normal," Jews were in fact living the time in which people were gradually being desensitized to hate against Jews. It was the stage when human rights commissions -- had they existed -- could have been most consequential.
No one could have imagined any connection between hate and what came many years later in that civilized nation, a nation no less civilized than Canada is today. But through a gradual, barely noticeable process fuelled by hate, some of those civilized people were unwittingly drawn into the atrocities committed later. Recent reports from Germany confirm how very ordinary people participated in the crimes.
What have 750,000 Muslim Canadians done other than work hard in their corner stores, cabs, or jobs to make a living, care for their families, raise their kids, and do what every other family in Canada does? So why the hate? Simply because there are criminals among them, as is the case with any other group?
Terrorists can never destroy a nation if it remains united against them.
But since hate corrodes the very fabric that holds a nation together, mainstream haters who exploit terrorism to polarize society do more harm than any terrorists will ever achieve.
The 9/11 tragedy and similar events resulted from hate by fringe groups. Yet, instead of being role models for something better, those in the mainstream have become supporters of hate speech, reinforcing that hate is the way to go. Canada didn't fight a horrific war against the Nazis' hatred only to nurture that same hatred here.
Today Canada is able to call itself "civilized" because enlightened Canadians repeatedly challenged wrongs that the rest of the population took for granted. Canada has moved forward and left hate against Chinese behind, left hate against blacks behind, against Jews, Ukrainians, Sikhs, Japanese, and others.
It's unimaginable to ever return to writing or speaking of them in the hateful manner of the past. But Muslims have been left behind. It's time that gratuitous hate against Muslims was replaced with objective debate, free of hate.

Re: "Time for Canadians to be intolerant of intolerance," Rob Breakenridge, Opinion, May 27.
I thought Rob Breakenridge was addressing the gratuitous intolerance repeatedly expressed against Muslims.
Instead, I found the same old, same old. What have Muslim Canadians done other than work hard in their corner
stores, offices, cabs and jobs to care for their families, raise their kids, and do what every other Canadian
family does?
The examples Breakenridge gives are neither here nor there. Some imams' names, the Quebec report, a website out
of millions, and the hijab, the head scarf for which innocent women are vilified. As for polygamy, look at the
polygamist sects long thriving in the U.S. and Canada, challenged lately only on account of child abuse. That's a
matter for the law, not for expressing intolerance towards 750,000 Muslims.
What's inexcusable is such intolerance against overwhelmingly law-abiding, decent people is taking place in
Canada in the 21st century, by civilized people, not cave dwellers; in a nation founded on Christian love that
Muslims themselves experience today; and in an age following the lessons of Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo, Kenya and South
Africa. But do we ever learn? With all due respect, the only intolerance that "has been thoroughly exposed" is the
column. As for Tarek Fatah, it appears he detects "Islamists" behind every lamppost, yet one honest, objective look
at reality would instantly dispel that paranoia.

++Responding to: Michael Coren
I-Responding to a Canadian "Christian" broadcaster/writer/author called Michael
Coren
Example one:In this example, Michael Coren uses simplistic, disconnected events to make
inappropriate, inapplicable, stereotypical generalizations, and draw unjustified conclusions. He makes a serious
intolerant accusation against conservative Islam based on absolutely no evidence at all (see response after article,
and the comments before "Example 2"):
Excerpts from Michael Coren's column of December 15, 2007, 'Denial is sickening' , in The Sun:
December 15, 2007
There's a worrying link between conservative Islam and anger
It's the episode of Little Mosque on the Prairie that I missed. The one where the father is so angry with his
teenage daughter for not wearing the hijab that he
strangles her to death. ...
... we do know that he has been
charged with the crime and that friends told reporters there had been terrible arguments about Aqsa's refusal to
wear Islamic head covering ....
Most Canadian Muslim leaders immediately condemned what had happened but it didn't take very long for the usual
suspects to explain on radio and television
that the tragedy had nothing to do with the Muslim faith ...Islam we were told, is a religion of peace.
Which is probably just what the owner of a Christian bookstore in Gaza thought three months ago as he was
murdered .. Or Danny
Pearl, shortly before the American journalist had his head cut off by Islamic terrorists --...
Or the wretched gang-rape victim in Saudi Arabia sentenced to 200 lashes .... Or the women stoned to death for
adultery. Or the Iranian men hanged because they were homosexual.
Or the women who .. died under the Taliban. Or the Christians persecuted and killed in Pakistan, Egypt and
Sudan.
Or the young women in France, Britain and all over Europe killed by fathers and brothers for leaving Islam, ..
MUHAMMAD
Or the teacher who allowed a student to name a teddy bear Muhammad, or Salman Rushdie's translator whose throat
was cut from ear to ear, or movie director
Theo Van Gogh who was slaughtered...
And on and on. On until the denial is sickening. It's ...Because of anything other than Islam.
Only a bigot would argue that every Muslim was violent or opposed to Western freedom. But only a coward or a
liar would argue that there was not a profound
and deeply worrying link between conservative Islam and myriad acts of terror, intolerance and hysterical anger.
It is not I who say this but ...Muslims who take to the streets at the drop of a cartoon ..; or the Muslims who
preach jihad
in ... open societies founded on Christian enlightenment.
They may represent a minority, but the harm they do is incalculable."
Michael Coren goes on to write:
"This dysfunctional venom does not come from
Christian, Jew, Hindu, or Buddhist ....
It is time for free discussion in this free country, whether it offends or not."

Simplistic generalization
Hesham M. Sabry
Toronto Sun
Sat, December 22, 2007
Michael Coren's "Denial is sickening" (Dec. 15) is misleading. He jumped to conclusions based on widely
differing incidents. It's similar to lumping Robert
Pickton's murders with Abu Ghraib sadism, Guantanamo torture, the long list of school massacres, etc., then writing
"the white race is evil."
Or lumping the Rwandan genocide in which clergy participated, with The Holocaust -- where six million Jews were
killed because they weren't Christian, then
adding aboriginal kids abused in Christian residential schools, the scandal of pedophile priests, and concluding
"Christianity is evil."
Coren mentions a Gazan Christian victim, but fails to mention hundreds of Muslims killed by fellow Muslims. If
Christians were targeted, none would be alive
today. Coren also says no violence comes from Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Tamils, Sikhs, etc.
He must live in a cocoon. Each group has violence and bloodshed on its hands, not to mention violence against
women. The Muslim world has some 55
nations. Domestic abuse cases are rampant in Canada.
If Islam caused family violence, all non-Muslim domestic violence would be absent. Muslim communities do suffer
some serious issues, but the way to address
them is through rational debate, not wild generalizations and simplistic accusations.
The Bible and Koran contain war and violence, but their overriding message is love and kindness. Everyone, Coren
included, ought follow that message,
instead of trying to pin evil exclusively on some faith, race, or culture.

"Guess you missed the part where Michael wrote: "Only a bigot would argue that every Muslim was violent or opposed to Western freedom.""
See HaSM's comment on Sun editor's above comment: Playing with semantics, toying with a nation’s stability
The above Letter as mailed to 'The Sun' (only for the sake of the extra points made in it. Otherwise, the Sun left all the points and fundamental features fully intact and as poignant as the original):
Michael Coren's commentary - 'Denial is sickening' - is misleading.
Dear Editor,
Coren jumped to conclusions based on widely differing incidents. It's similar to lumping Robert Pickton's
murders, with Abu Ghraib sadism, with Guantanamo
torture, with the long list of school massacres, etc., then writing "the white race is evil". Or lumping the
Rwandan genocide in which clergy, including a Bishop,
participated, with 'The Holocaust' - six million Jews killed because they weren't Christian, with Dennis Rader -
serial killer even while church leader, with
aboriginal kids abused in Christian residential schools, with pedophile priests, then concluding "Christianity is
evil".
Coren mentions a Gazan Christian victim, but fails to mention hundreds of Muslims killed by fellow Muslims due
to the chaos there. If Christians were
targeted, none would be alive today. That applies to the Muslim world, where Christians could have been
exterminated centuries before NATO, America, or the
United Nations ever existed.
Coren generalises from the tragic murder by terrorists of Daniel Pearl, but ignores the thousands of westerners
who find kindness from the bulk of Muslim
populations.
He also says no violence comes from Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Tamil, Sikhs etc.. Coren must live in a cocoon.
Each group, bar none, has violence and
bloodshed on its hands, not to mention violence against women. If one follows international news, it's all there.
Japan's Buddhism didn't prevent it from
committing horrific atrocities during the Second World War. And Canada is still investigating its largest terrorist
attack by one of those groups. Most
significantly, each of those groups, except Buddhism and partially Hinduism, represents only one nation, or region,
etc., so how would it be if it were 40 or 50,
all undergoing growing pains?
The Muslim world has some 55 nations. Domestic abuse cases in Calgary alone - where a man strangled his wife
barely a week ago - rose to 12,137 cases last
year. If Islam caused family violence, all non-Muslim domestic violence would be absent.
Muslim communities do suffer some serious issues, but the way to address them is through objective, rational
debate, not wild generalizations and simplistic accusations.
The Bible and the Quran contain war and violence verses, but their overriding message is love and kindness.
Everyone, Coren included, ought follow that
message, instead of trying to pin evil exclusively on some faith, race, or culture.
Example 2:
Introduction
In this example Michael Coren selectively uses the violence-inciting, hateful words of some fringe Muslim blogger
to attack all Muslims collectively on account of that blogger, and then make generalized accusations against all fundamentalist/ conservative Muslims.
That is similar to making generalizations about all fundamentalist Christians - including Mr. Coren himself - from
the wrongs of a few of them. Or generalising from his intolerant writings against Muslims to all good Christians who do
not engage in that shameful unChristian conduct. It goes entirely against the Christian preaching of
love which he alleges to be a champion of!
But would we generalise from his intolerance against Muslims to all true, good Christians?
NEVER.
That's how we, secular Muslims, and the bulk of decent Muslims, including fundamentalist and conservative ones
who would never speak ill of Christians, distinguish ourselves from people like him.
People like him meaning people who not only make no distinctions, but actually go out of their way to try and pin the wrongs
of some to whole segments of Muslims as witnessed in his columns. He certainly neither speaks for true, loving
Christians, nor for the religion of love, Christianity.
It’s a shame that someone who calls himself "Christian", neither practices nor knows anything of the true teachings of a benevolent,
compassionate, loving Christ. May Jesus forgive him.
Excerpts from Michael Coren's column of February 2, 2008 "Episode Missed", in The Sun :
Late last year I wrote that, "It's the episode of Little Mosque on the Prairie that I missed. The one where the
father is so angry with his teenage daughter for not
wearing the hijab that he strangles her to death.
"Perhaps it will be in the special features section of the DVD version, released just in time for the holiday
that used to be known as Christmas but not any
longer because the word might hurt someone's feelings."
I was referring to the grotesque murder of a young woman in Ontario allegedly because she dressed in modern,
western clothes and refused to conform to strict
Islamic teaching. I was, inevitably, accused of racism and Islamophobia and threatened with murder.
Now I realize I'm missing all sorts of episodes of Little Mosque...., the University of Toronto student who, as
exposed in a report last week by The National Post, repeatedly has posted on
the Internet...
"Any and all Western soldiers getting prepared to enter Muslim nations should be legitimate targets by any and
all Islamic militants....
WATCHING BLOOD FLOW
He went on to write that, "I enjoy watching the blood flow from the Western troops" and "when do I get to shoot
a few Jews down. Why f...ing target the Americans when the Jews are better?"
... a Muslim extremist who was convicted last week in Britain for conducting an elaborate plot to kidnap a
Muslim soldier serving
in the British army and cut off his head....
That man and his gang will go to prison. Hossain likely will not even be prosecuted. Unlike journalists Ezra
Levant and Mark Steyn, currently facing numerous
Human Rights Commission hearings. Levant's crime was reprinting cartoons implying a link between terrorism and
militant Islam. Steyn's was to discuss
Islamic ambitions and to quote various Muslim leaders calling for Islam to conquer Europe.
If young Hossain were unique it would be bad enough. He certainly isn't. ... read the death-threat e-mail
received by me and every other journalist who criticizes Islamic fundamentalism, ask Canadian author Irshad Manji,
ask the families of those legions of people
murdered in the name of Islam.
...the Canadian establishment and the deniers in the media. ..the sorts of people who make painfully patronizing
shows about little
mosques in Western Canada telling non-Muslims that everything is fine apart from our intolerance...
HaSM's response:
Find responses to all the issues mentioned in Mr. Coren's accusations in other pages of this web site, including non-Muslim violence galore.
The
analysis of Mark Steyn's Muslim-demonizing article that Mr. Coren mentions in his commentary is coming soon.
The following is a longer response edited from a shorter one submitted to the Sun.
-------------------
Michael Coren sadly continues to discredit himself by his shallow arguments.
In his latest tirade he rails
against anything - such as "Little Mosque on the Prairie"- that dares show Muslims in a "normal" light, whether
they are innocent and law-abiding - as the vast majority are, or not.
Not surprisingly, he fails to mention that we all missed the episode of 'Little Mosque on the Prairie' that
addressed the intolerance exhibited and expressed toward Muslims by commentators like him who generalise their intolerance to all Muslims in their
columns, commentaries, or TV or radio shows. And often doing so even while disingenuously telling us that they do not speak of all Muslims
(see Response to disingenuous qualifications such as Mr. Coren's).
What's more, in decades of Muslim existence in Canada, in regions covering all of the Canadian
provinces and territories, there has been only that alleged murder of a daughter by her father, and yet Mr. Coren wants a TV
episode about it.
On the other hand, in that same period of time the amount of intolerance that was expressed and propagated by various commentators
against Muslims throughout Canada was in the thousands, including a few times within the past few months
courtesy of the said Mr. Coren himself.
So how many episodes should we devote to that? Not even a whole series would suffice exposing that much intolerance. And how about a series about the harmful and destructive effects of all that intolerance? Why is Mr. Coren silent about that aspect of matters? The answer is obvious.
The ill-effects - lethal in many cases - of intolerance fill the literature and the world's history books.
Indeed, given the above, "Little Mosque on the Prairie" writers have been very kind to intolerant commentators and very kind not to expose and tackle their ill-effect on Canadian society. It is a disgrace to
any civilized nation, let alone one as advanced as Canada, to have such intolerance in anyone in its mainstream.
And what's even worse, is that they use the platform - radio, TV, Newspaper, magazine - that they are privileged to have access to, and which is not readily available to their victims, to produce a regular dose of intolerance, make excuses for their intolerant positions, and criticise others, while those others are denied the same privileges. How ethical is that? (Contemplate the issue through a few general
questions posed to good, decent Canadians, in other words to the overwhelming majority of Canadians).
Worse yet - if there's anything left that can be worse than what we already covered above in their conduct -
- instead of using that media platform they are privileged to have access to, to advance
the causes of harmony, peace and stability in this wonderful nation, they are using it exactly in the opposite manner, to destroy, divide,
destabilise, and polarise, all in fulfilment of their own agendas.
In his column, Mr. Coren can find no more profound thoughts than to write that some man on the Web wrote this or that, then make
embarrassing - intellectually speaking, that is - generalizations and conclusions based on what some wacko or other
wrote on a web site, or some criminals did somewhere in the world.
One, or even one thousand wackos, do not 750,000 Canadian Muslims - going about their lives peacefully - make.
And even then, none of the hypothetical "one thousand wackos" attacked Ezra Levant or anyone at the 'Western
Standard', or vandalized its property, etc., which speaks volumes against Coren's generalised accusations. But
that's why he never draws attention to such realities.
The amount of fundamentalist Christian hate on the Web beats any other, but only particular people would use such vile material to attack Christianity and Christians. As for murder and violence in the mainstream, it is horrifyingly abundant day and night, and that's in Canada alone. Coren ignores it all just to pin wrongdoing uniquely on Muslims.
It’s truly sad to watch a once brilliant mind deteriorate so badly as to write such unsophisticated, imbalanced, and disingenuous analyses.

Racism is also a problem, not only integration
...What ensued was even worse. Muslim concerns were attacked, vandalized, or torched. That should have shown the Dutch that, like everyone else, they too have their extremists, and to judge all Muslims by the actions of one man who killed van Gogh was therefore wrong. But they didn't heed the lesson. Every Muslim of the 15 million in Europe was held responsible for van Gogh's murder. Hordes of innocent Muslims were fired from their jobs, discriminated against in various ways, and variously abused in public...
...Racists will have us believe that once Muslims are fully integrated, they'll be "tolerated" and made to feel welcome. Not so fast.
The majority of European Jews looked, dressed, spoke, and were fully involved in the nations they lived in. They were even white skinned. But when the time came for tolerance, their integration, their great contributions to Europe's arts, science, and industry, did little for them. They were shipped -- with the willing cooperation of many locals across the nations of Europe -- to be massacred in their millions...
Viewpoint: European tolerance only a veneer
...."What foreigners have failed to recognize is that we Danes have grown increasingly xenophobic over the years. To my mind, the publication of the cartoons had little to do with generating a debate about self-censorship and freedom of expression. It can be seen only in the context of a climate of pervasive hostility toward anything Muslim in Denmark."
....It was, after all, the "barbaric" Muslim world that massacred 6 million Jews! Six million people - a mind-boggling figure - deliberately rounded up for elimination. Not in some remote "barbaric" jungle, or by some terrorist group, but in the heart of "civilized" Europe by a "cultured" government right next door to where the present offensive cartoons originated. And that was barely 60 years ago, not 2000 - unbelievable as that is, and with the collaboration of numerous Europeans....
Hard-working minorities, tenth generation criminals
....Clearly, being 10th-generation "integrated" Canadians hasn't prevented criminals from regularly robbing Muslim and other immigrant convenience store owners or cab drivers trying to make an honest buck. If anything, it's those hard-working, law-abiding new immigrants and minorities who truly live up to western ideals and values, not the 10th-generation mainstream "integrated" criminals who target them.
...If we blame crimes by new immigrants, or insufficiently integrated minorities, such as Muslims, on multiculturalism, we might as well then blame the crimes of fully integrated minorities on integration and cancel it. Good people are good people, and bad are bad, whether they are 100-per-cent integrated 10th generation Canadians, or new arrivals fully immersed in their own cultures....
America's Muslims Bear their Pain with Dignity
....American Muslims guilty of nothing other than being Muslim, rather than attack anyone, have themselves been physically assaulted, mistreated, discriminated against, fired from their jobs, racially profiled, their mosques and businesses vandalized, their veiled women assaulted, spat on, insulted, with no end in sight. Moreover, their religion and prophet have been viciously vilified, not by skinheads, but by prominent conservative Christian leaders,....
....All that was, and continues to be, committed against innocent Muslims in the name of guilt by shared physical, religious, or other attributes. So what is significant here is that despite facing enough mistreatment to create tens of Columbine School-like angry killers, not one of those supposedly "violent Muslims" picked up a gun and took revenge for what he or his loved ones suffered. They all bore the abuses with dignity and peace, and continue to do so.
Where, then, is all the violence we should have been witnessing if the haters' propaganda about Islam's and Muslims' evil were true? ...
Facts Haters Hate Hearing
....There are over one billion Muslims worldwide. If any Muslim was ever bent on answering a call for "jihad," what better time than the hours, days, and weeks following the "successful" Sept. 11 attacks when bin Laden's call for killing Americans was loudest? Yet across the globe, across the one billion Muslims, not one Muslim moved a finger to harm Americans. The weeks passed and still none.
We could have expected millions of such attacks if the talk about bin Laden's influence on Muslims were true. Or even tens of thousands, or in the least, hundreds. In reality there were less than a handful of attacks; that's it. Many more innocent Muslims and Muslim look-alikes than that were attacked across civilized America.
So how infatuated are Muslims with bin Laden? Evidently not at all. Far from attacking Americans in answer to bin Laden, Muslims felt deep shame and guilt over Sept. 11, even though it wasn't their fault and they had no say at all in its commission, any more than the Oklahoma bombing was the white American population's fault....
Yet not once were the above facts brought to the public's attention, let alone emphasized. They're the kind of facts hate-mongers hate hearing.
Which Immigrants are We Talking about?
....Are "white" dominated offices, positions, or communities crime or corruption free?
From the political assignment of friends to high-paying useless jobs as farewell gifts, up to the clergy's abuse of children, many crimes are dominated by whites. And we are not speaking of street kids here, of whom crime may be expected, we are speaking of most highly regarded positions of trust held by those who are supposedly high up along the intellectual, religious, and/or social ladder. Are those two categories even comparable?
....Only a few weeks ago a Briton conceived of a devilish plot, invited an innocent Canadian family to the U.K. under false pretences, and took them hostage to force Canada to give him custody of his children. Was he Jamaican, was he East Indian, was he Jewish, was he Moslem, was he Chinese? NO. All that is not meant to denigrate anybody - and we'll return to that shortly, what is meant here is to point out that there are the good and the bad in every culture, country, society, people, religion, faith or whatever.
That every abusive clergyman was a white Christian and that they were caught in large numbers will still not justify in any way condemning or steroetyping white Christian clergymen in general. We still cannot declare: 'priests are child sexual abusers'...
....When the Montreal riots broke out recently after the cancelled rock concerts, and later after a sports event (which was won by the home team!), every hoodlum I could see on the T.V. screen wreaking havoc on the streets was white. The only person, on the screen, who was indignant, frustrated and as angry as I was at the senseless, ignorant destruction that was taking place, was an admirable teenaged girl of East Indian heritage who expressed one's own rage at what was going on. ..
Muslims Can't Understand the Hatred
....One of the recent accusations that demonstrates such profound ignorance of Islam is that it is intolerant of Christianity and Judaism. In truth, Islam not only "tolerates" Christianity and Judaism, a Muslim must actually believe in and respect both.
It is hard for Muslims in the West to understand the hatred in many such letters. While they have lived with Christians and Jews in considerable long-lasting harmony for centuries in the Muslim world, it is a novel, and apparently difficult thing for some Christians in predominantly Western Christian states, to live harmoniously side by side with Muslims. But that isn't a new phenomenon. Another minority group, Jews, who did live alongside Christians in western nations - in Europe - suffered hate, persecution, expulsion, pogroms, and the Holocaust.
If The World Were All Christian
....If the world were all Christian, would the Christian on Christian genocide in Rwanda have been prevented; would there not have been two barbaric basically Christian world wars, would the terrorist bombings in Colombia stop; would the terrorist attacks in Northern Ireland or Spain disappear instantly? They wouldn't, because the problems would still be there.
Would the venerable professor then write, "terrorism is all in Christian nations," or would he address the determinants and specifics of each case? That's how responsible, educated intellectuals would look at it, and that's how it should be addressed regardless of the religion of the perpetrators...
'King and Country', or the Promise of Paradise
....As for the reason there's more "Muslim" than other violence in the world, it's simply that there are more Muslim peoples undergoing growing pains and struggles for rights and freedom at this time.
Yet it seems like only yesterday Europe's growing pains cost the world hundreds of millions of human lives. Christians fought and killed fellow Christians, almost exterminated European Jews, and colonized or destroyed numerous hapless peoples and cultures around the world.
The stages of European growing pains lasted centuries of upheaval, death and destruction. But was it the teachings of the Bible that led them to all that horrific violence? Certainly not.
That's why we don't call those bloody centuries of European savagery, militarism, and colonialism "Christian" violence; we see that period for what it is, the West's growing pains.
Interestingly, some of those growing pains continue to this day, as in Spain, the Balkans, Northern Ireland, Eastern Europe.
So there, we are witnessing how growing pains of Europeans - Christians - again, at the end of the 20th century and into the 21st, are still manifesting themselves in violence, bloodshed, and even genocide. Yes genocide in midst of Europe....
Yes, Only Two Religions: Love and Hate
...hate, bigotry, and divisiveness have followers who exist in every faith, race, and nation,... They don't need to be terrorists who actually physically harm others. Their words, arising from hate, are enough to cause pain or instigate violence. And they're not ogres working underground, either.
.....In fact, we read, listen, or watch a sample of them everyday in our own media here in Canada. They're the ones who constantly try to generate hate where there isn't any. They pounce on every opportunity they get to drive wedges between faiths and peoples. Some of them even speak to us from the platform of religion, telling us that they speak in the name of Jesus....
Are They The Same People?
...When we came to Canada I was appalled to discover that descendants of my favourite people were in fact continuing a crime of the sorts I had read about and which I buried my head in the sand about for so long. There was no escape from facing the fact that those people, that I adored since childhood, were the very same ones who had committed all those atrocities across the world. Here I was witnessing a sample of those crimes in action. What a shame, what a disappointment. But to whom could I direct the big question..
There is no place for 'hate speech' in Canada
...Terrorists can never destroy a nation if it remains united against them.
But since hate corrodes the very fabric that holds a nation together, mainstream haters who exploit terrorism to polarize society do more harm than any terrorists will ever achieve.
The 9/11 tragedy and similar events resulted from hate by fringe groups. Yet, instead of being role models for something better, those in the mainstream who have become supporters of hate speech, reinforce that hate is the way to go.
