Great Women of Our Times - Rachel Corrie, Irena Sendlerowa, Vanessa Redgrave, Barbara Hall, Louise Arbour, Benazir Bhutto, others.
Great Women of Our Times
This page is dedicated to the memory of Rachel Corrie
We Shall Not Forget
Rachel gave her life opposing a gross injustice against a helpless people who were living in peace on their land and suddenly found themselves uprooted, pushed into the desert, mountain, and sea, and turned into refugees, becoming the lost Palestinians.
Rachel showed such courage and humanity that would shame the most hardened abusers of human rights and the most heartless politicians.
Those who support Israeli occupation and expansionism - as compared to supporting legitimate Israeli security - place enormous obstacles and difficulties in the path of westerners and all others supporting Palestinian rights. Those supporters of wronged Palestinians are the ones true to the principles of justice and humanity, and true to the great values the western world touts repeatedly. Sadly, some in the western world shed those values in the blink of an eye to accommodate Israeli expansionist policies and human rights abuses.
Such Palestinian rights supporters - thousands upon thousands of righteous, honorable, noble, courageous people of unique integrity of all faiths - have been repeatedly speaking out against the only remaining occupation of fellow human beings in the 21st century. In the meantime, many leaders of the "civilized", "democratic" world, under the influence of the supporters of occupation and expansionism, have turned a deaf ear and blind eye to the wrong, inhumanity, and injustice that the Palestinians have been and are suffering.
Neither the righteous supporters of human rights, such as Rachel, nor any peace-loving person is against Israel's existence, but we all cry enough when it comes to depriving others of the same rights Israelis enjoy. Enough keeping the Palestinians deprived of their dignity and humanity for so many decades simply so that Israel may expand onto more occupied land for annexation.
Let's be clear here. No one suggests that Israel compromise its security in any way. It has the right to exist in safety and security. What we do not support is a sovereign state's expansion onto other's land with total indifference to the human misery it causes people it occupies who are at its mercy. Such inhumanity for the sake of expansionism is unbecoming of an ancient people and faith.
Taking others' land is inexcusable and has nothing to do with safety or security.
In that respect, we also remind Muslims that those few among them who use the wrongs of Israel to promote hatred against Jews collectively, are doing something unacceptable and un-Islamic. Muslims should categorically reject, and unreservedly condemn any such conduct, and advise all Muslims that it goes completely against Islam's honorable teachings of tolerance toward other faiths.

Honouring Great Women
On this page HaSM wishes to honour women from all walks of life, whether professionals, politicians, students, house wives, artists, journalists, or elected or other dignitaries, who despite the odds, never wavered from their support of human rights and standing by wronged people, the downtrodden, the oppressed, and in some cases valiantly risked their safety, or selflessly risked their careers, or dedicated their lives, or in some cases gave their lives - as Rachel Corrie did - for the sake of the rights and liberty of people who are not their own.
Many women have accomplished great achievements, but this page is dedicated to those who went against the current - literally against the accepted current wrongs, against the powers that be, against the haters and oppressors, to do, say, support, work for what's right, just, civilized, humane, ethical and moral. In other words put principles and values ahead of political expediency, career advancement, financial incentives, etc.
It is always the easiest path to beat, joining Goliath in beating up on David, on the weak, the oppressed, the occupied, the denigrated, the persecuted. It's easy and pays instant dividends and produces immediate rewards.
It was the easiest path to take back when the Jews were the persecuted and hated and hardly anyone came to their defense, cared to support or speak up for them. It was a shameful stain upon humanity as a whole, but especially upon those who at the time looked the other way even after they had stumbled upon the truth of what was going on and seen how wrong it was.
Today it is no different. Some people - sadly, even those who because of their own history of persecution ought know better - stumble upon the truth and choose expediency, financial interests, the path of what is most popular, their own hateful agendas, the tempting book contract or media coverage if they jump on the bandwagon and beat up on the downtrodden, while others set all those self-interests and material inducements aside, and choose integrity, honour, principles, ethics, morals, ideals, dignity and conscience, and do what's right, even if it will affect their personal lives, careers, or financial situation.
For the reasons above we do not include women "firsts", such as first woman in space, first woman to fly, first female prime minister, first woman elected to parliament, first woman president, famous queens or empresses, or famous or rich celebrities etc. unless of course that "achievement" was coupled with real work for the oppressed and wronged.
So the reader will not find Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Thatcher, or Mia Farrow here. They might have achieved something for themselves, their careers, their image, their fame, or even for their nations as a whole, which is fine, and presumably represents success, or even milestones along the path toward women's emancipation and empowerment, which are worthy causes, but a far cry from sacrificing their lives, careers, interests, etc. to do something for the persecuted, the oppressed, the unfortunate, the looked-down upon, the disadvantaged, the underprivileged, the weak, the downtrodden.
In some cases they even represent the exact opposite of what we celebrate here. Though they pretend to champion noble causes, they are really in it for any of a range of possible or obvious ulterior motives. They pretend to champion some noble cause or other, but in reality it is all an image building move, with other agendas to suit, and a lot of hypocrisy to let it go down more easily. Such actions are very transparent and will not fool the wise and experienced, even if they may work for public consumption.
Mia Farrow and her fake concern over Darfur is a good example of a very dubious and suspect cause. Her sudden concern for human suffering appears more of an attempt at diverting attention from the long-standing, ongoing tragedy of the long-suffering Palestinian people, the kind of tragedy that truly brave, conscientious, and courageous women take on. She never put in a word in support of them all those decades that their suffering has been going on under her very nose! In her current actions she only manages to draw attention to her past failures and shortcomings. And indeed, to any intelligent, upstanding person, she has discredited rather than enhanced her public image.
If she truly is the kind of person who is sensitive to human suffering, where was she all those decades of Palestinian suffering? It reflects very poorly on her, more so than if she had continued to be silent like others are.
If she had been already actively involved in humanitarian causes, alleviating other human suffering, and then simply took an extra interest in Darfur it would have been more convincing even normal and understandable, but a total blind eye to such obvious suffering as that of the Palestinians and then suddenly developing a bleeding heart for the Darfurians, whose support can encompass any of a number of well-publicized agendas, appears quite disingenuous.
Thus this page is dedicated to a genuinely honorable, noble woman, Rachel Corrie.
Some women included here have both the positive and the negative, but they deserve mention for the positive and the genuine care and concern they show for the underprivileged, the persecuted, the targeted for hate, etc. to the best of their capability. Not everyone is equally capable of the same exertions, efforts, and feats whether mentally or physically, we must recognise.
Such a controversial figure is Hillary Clinton, about whom we received a few objections. Her basic stance is one of support for the weak, but currently, political expediency sadly took precedence over her basic beliefs on some issues. However, because she did do, and try to do and still tries to do good for the disadvantaged when she can, in gratitude we feel she deserves a spot here.

Canada is able to call itself civilized today because enlightened, caring people throughout its history, such as Barbara Hall, fought wrongs committed against minorities even when the rest of the population took those wrongs for granted. Other good people did the same in other nations.
And just as the present day conscientious human rights defenders suffer opposition, so did those in the past also invariably face opposition, resistance, and even demonization, from many among the mainstream, including some in the media and others in positions of authority and responsibility. We now look back and laud the supporters of human rights, while the human rights abusers, the racists, and the haters are loathed by decent people both in Canada and all other civilized nations across the globe.

....Stereotyping hurts the people and groups targeted, their families and their communities, and ultimately, all of us. In the post-9/11 world, we have seen more and more negative portrayals of Muslims and the rise of Islamophobia. Like racial profiling and other types of discrimination, ascribing the behaviour of individuals to a group damages everyone in that group...

Eleanor Roosevelt
"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."

"The First Lady also took up the fight against lynching. When her husband hesitated about meeting with black leader Walter White of the NAACP about the sponsorship of an anti-lynching bill in 1934, Eleanor intervened to arrange the meeting. Although Roosevelt refused to support the anti-lynching bill for fear of alienating the southern wing of the Democratic Party, Eleanor continued to mediate between him and Walter White. Many African-Americans considered Eleanor their friend in the White House when it seemed as if no one else in power would make racial equality a priority. Certainly, the culmination of Mrs. Roosevelts efforts on behalf of blacks contributed to the advancement of black people in the United States, and Eleanor's open mind resulted in opening the minds of the masses."

Only by being objective and truthful about right and wrong can the playing field be levelled, and a meeting point between west and Islam come more within reach.
Karen Armstrong never apologizes for Islam or Muslims, she states facts that are and have been out there for anyone to see for ages, already well-established and corroborated by numerous academics, historians, and scholars, the majority of whom are non-Muslim. She does not invent nor need to invent anything.
She only puts the available data to the public in an effort to educate, and thus close the divide that haters on both sides are trying to widen.
A big thank you to her and to everyone like her who is honest and sincere in doing the right thing, which also helps in bringing people together through facts and truth.
